Pune, the Queen of Deccan
As Pune was the best city on the Deccan Plateau, it was given the name "Queen of Deccan". Aga Khan Palace
Opened in 1892, this palace was an act of charity by the spiritual leader of the Nizari Ismaili Muslims who wanted to help the famine hit poor.
Less known facts
Mahatma Gandhi was held there as a prisoner along with his wife Kasturbha, secretary Mahadeobhai, and others in the 1940s.
Shaniwar Wada
The fortress was built in 1732 by the great warrior Bajirao Peshwa, who in his short lifespan faught 20 battles and won them all!
Less known facts
It is said that on a full moon night the fort is haunted by a ghost of a former Peshwa king who was murdered in the palace by his aunt and uncle.
Pataleshwar Caves
An 8th century rock-cut cave temple and quite possibly one of the oldest structures here. The name Pataleshwar means God of the Underworld.
Less known facts
A grain of rice, which is kept in the museum inside the caves, has 5000 letters inscribed on it and is mentioned in the Guinness Book Of Records.
